Writer Resolutions

Here we go again! It’s resolution time…. And writers are not immune to the lure of declarations of good intentions that rarely turn out in the end.

It’s easy for me to state that I’m going to:

Find a new agent…

Rework the novel that caused the previous agent to call it quits…

(Although I liked it!)

Finish the stalled 5th addition to the Candy’s Monsters novella series…

Start submitting short stories to contests and anthologies again…

Push for another ghostwriting gig…

But, perhaps, it’s better for me to resolve to:

Give myself more time and make the search for a new agent less of a quest and more of a business problem to be solved…

Reread the novel with an eye to improving it…

Rethink the Steampunk Mystery (5th Candy’s Monster) before diving in again…

WRITE short stories without the pressure of submissions…

And accept—or reject—the next ghostwriting gig that comes my way…

Let’s all have a good 2017. I resolve to be a better writer by taking more time, reworking with a gentle/critical eye, and indulging my adventurous reader/writer side!

What is your resolution?

I'm moving away from old-style writer resolutions.

    Thanks for posting this, Candy.
I like the way you move from wishes to actions.

I resolve to give myself the time I need to think about my work. I resolve to give myself the respect I long for, rather than looking for it elsewhere. And I resolve to make it a practice to work on my art–although I hate to use the word “work” here! Makes it sound much too utilitarian and mundane.

Oh yeah, and joy and love and all that, which can translate into the work. Happy New Year!

Moving from wishes, desires, and plans to reality is all about ACTIONS! But the reality of writing, or more to the point the reality of published writing, depends on the actions (wishes, desires & plans) of others. So, since we can only control the actions of one person, we are stuck working hard to make things happen. That’s where it gets tricky for me. Work, work, work, produces something, but not necessarily what one wishes. I like your word—practice. It makes the endless hours into process and not product and that is where art lives.

Let’s all have Happy & Healthy 2017 filled with art of all kinds!

        Thanks!
Right now, I think I need all the encouragement I can get. I’m on jury duty and I just got selected for a panel. That means my life has been taken over by the trial. Crazy way to start the year.
